No state ties American mining’s past and future together like Nevada. The Comstock Lode gave it a nickname and statehood, invisible gold made it a modern superpower, and its lithium is becoming the battery under the electric economy. Born of the Comstock

In 1859, prospectors on the slopes of Mount Davidson hit the Comstock Lode, the first major silver strike in American history. Virginia City became the richest boomtown on the continent, Comstock money helped build San Francisco, and the flood of bullion helped carry Nevada to statehood in 1864 as the Battle Born state.

The modern era began quietly in 1961 on the Carlin Trend, where geologists proved something that changed gold mining worldwide: deposits of microscopic, invisible gold locked inside other minerals, in quantities nobody had been able to see or recover before. The Carlin Trend became the most productive gold trend in the Western Hemisphere.

Nevada today

Nevada produces roughly three-quarters of all US gold. The heart of it is Nevada Gold Mines, the Barrick and Newmont joint venture that ranks as the largest gold-mining complex in the world, anchored on the Carlin Trend. Around it runs one of the deepest benches of operators, explorers, and service companies in global mining. Near Winnemucca, Hycroft Mining works one of the largest gold and silver resources in the country.

Then there is lithium. Albemarle’s Silver Peak in Clayton Valley is the only producing lithium operation in the United States, and Lithium Americas’ Thacker Pass project, backed by General Motors, is under construction on one of the largest known lithium resources in the country. East of Reno, the Gigafactory turns those battery metals into packs and vehicles, the clearest mine-to-product line on the whole tour.
