Southern Utah: Uranium & the Atomic Frontier

Lisbon Valley, UtahUranium

Charlie Steen's uranium country: the 1952 discovery that set off America's atomic boom, and the untested half of the valley being hunted again.

The History

In 1952, a broke geologist named Charlie Steen drilled into the Mi Vida deposit in Lisbon Valley, in San Juan County, and touched off the great American uranium boom. The valley's west flank went on to produce roughly 78 million pounds of U3O8. But the Lisbon Valley anticline has two sides: the same host rock dives deeper on the east flank, and that half was never really tested. American Atomics is testing it now — its Big Indian Project holds 217 claims on the east flank, hunting what the company believes may be the mirror of Steen's discovery, a hypothesis the drill still has to prove. Just over the Colorado line, its Blue Street Complex works past-producing ground in Paradox Valley, and down the road at Blanding, Energy Fuels' White Mesa mill — the only operating hard-rock uranium mill in America — anchors the processing end of the story.

The stops and companies we want on camera as the convoy works this ground. Proposed, not confirmed bookings, and growing as the dream tour list fills in.

  • American Atomics · Big Indian Project

CONFIRMED PARTNER STOP — the committed anchor of this leg: 217 claims on the anticline's east flank and a published NI 43-101, hunting the untested mirror of Steen's Mi Vida ground.

  • Charlie Steen's Mi Vida ground

Where the 1952 strike started the atomic boom — the west-flank discovery the whole valley is measured against.

  • Energy Fuels · White Mesa Mill

Attraction-class neighbor near Blanding: the only operating hard-rock uranium mill in America. Attraction, not a sponsorship target.

  • American Atomics · Blue Street Complex

The second front, just over the Colorado line in Paradox Valley: three past-producing mines, and andersonite — uranium rock that glows under blacklight.
