The History
Butte started as a gold placer camp in 1864 and nearly died twice before it found its destiny. Electricity changed everything: the world suddenly needed copper wire, and Butte sat on one of the greatest copper deposits ever found. By the early 1900s the Richest Hill on Earth was one of the largest copper producers in the world, and mining never left. Montana Resources works the Continental Pit today, producing copper and molybdenum from the same mineralized system the Copper Kings fought over. The season ends here, headframes still standing over the neighborhoods, before the convoy rolls home.
