
Why Antimony Is Suddenly a National-Security Metal

Ask someone to name a critical mineral and you will hear lithium, maybe cobalt. Almost no one says antimony. Yet antimony is on the United States critical minerals list, the country mines essentially none of it today, and it touches everything from the mattress you sleep on to the ammunition in a soldier’s magazine.
What antimony actually does
As antimony trioxide, it is the dominant flame retardant in plastics, electronics casings, upholstery, and children’s clothing, so most flame-resistant products around you trace back to an antimony mine. It hardens the lead plates in car and backup batteries, sharpens night-vision and infrared optics, and is essential to ammunition, explosives, and armor-piercing rounds. That last category is why the Department of Defense treats antimony as a strategic material.
The supply problem
Global supply is concentrated in a handful of countries, and domestic production has effectively gone to zero. When a metal is both essential to defense and sourced almost entirely from abroad, it becomes a national-security question, not just an industrial one. Emerging grid-scale liquid-metal batteries that use antimony to store renewable power only raise the stakes.
Where Season 1 digs in
Episode 4 of Hunting Hidden Treasures visits the Stibnite Gold Project near Yellow Pine, Idaho, where Perpetua Resources is working to reopen a site that supplied up to 90 percent of America’s antimony during World War II. If it comes back online, it would be the only domestic primary source of antimony, recovered alongside gold. It is the clearest example of the mine-to-product story we tell all season: a metal you cannot name, holding up systems you cannot live without.
