
Hercules Metals Identifies New Idaho Copper Target

Hercules Metals has found early evidence of a second porphyry copper center on its 100 percent owned property in western Idaho, roughly three kilometers east of the Leviathan discovery that first put the district on the map. The company announced the result on September 14, and The Northern Miner covered the update the following day.

What did Hercules Metals find at the Hook target?
Hole HER-26-03 started in unaltered rock and moved into increasingly altered ground: intense phyllic alteration, the quartz-sericite-pyrite footprint typical of a porphyry system’s outer shell, along with pyrite running 5 to 10 percent as disseminations and thin veins. Deeper in the hole, the rock showed distal skarn alteration in Triassic-age carbonate rock, plus a zone of hydrothermal breccia. None of that is ore grade on its own. It is the kind of alteration halo that geologists look for around the edges of a porphyry system before they ever find the copper-rich core, and the company says it looks like the same halo that surrounds Leviathan itself.
How does Hook connect to the Leviathan discovery?
Leviathan is the porphyry copper system that drew Barrick’s strategic investment into Hercules Metals after its 2023 discovery, and it sits at the center of what the company calls its push to define a new American copper district. Hook lies about three kilometers away, under its own 1.8-kilometer chargeability anomaly mapped by an induced-polarization survey, a technique that measures how well underground rock holds an electrical charge, a strong signal for the sulfide minerals that often accompany porphyry copper and molybdenum mineralization. This first hole was a cheap, fast test using an existing road, drilled 400 meters from the anomaly’s strongest core rather than through it, so it was never designed to hit the best part of the target.
What happens next for drilling and permitting?
Hercules Metals says it is now permitting temporary access roads and drill pads so it can test the high-chargeability core of the Hook anomaly directly, work the company describes as an updated plan of operations. Follow-up drilling is targeted for 2027, and the company’s qualified person, Vice President of Exploration Dillon Hume, signed off on the technical disclosure under Canadian reporting rules. Two other rigs remain active nearby, stepping out along the south side of Leviathan to test whether that system’s mineralization extends further along strike and to depth. There is no resource estimate at Hook, and the company is explicit that any mineralization there, if confirmed, may look nothing like what has been found at Leviathan.
Why does a second porphyry center matter for Idaho’s copper story?
A single alteration halo from one hole does not make a mine, and Hercules Metals is careful to frame this as an early, low-cost test rather than a discovery. But it adds another data point to a stretch of western Idaho that has drawn national attention since Leviathan surfaced in 2023, the same copper belt that also turned up a surprise tungsten discovery at a neighboring project last year.
