
Cameco Restarts Cigar Lake, Keeps 2026 Uranium Target

Cameco has restarted production at its Cigar Lake uranium mine in northern Saskatchewan, the company announced on July 14. The restart followed a roughly two-week suspension caused by a sulfuric acid plant problem at the McClean Lake mill, where Cigar Lake ore is processed. Cameco says its 2026 production target for the mine remains unchanged.

Why did Cigar Lake pause?
Cigar Lake ore travels to the McClean Lake mill, which is operated by Orano. In its July 1 operation update, Cameco said the mill’s sulfuric acid plant had shut down for repairs. Because Cigar Lake has limited ore-storage capacity, mining was temporarily suspended until the mill had enough acid available to resume processing.
This was a processing constraint, not a change in the underground uranium resource. It is a useful mine-to-product example: extracting ore is only one link in the chain. If the specialized facility that processes that ore stops, the mine can be forced to stop with it.
What restarted at Cigar Lake and McClean Lake?
The McClean Lake mill has resumed operations. Cameco says Cigar Lake has restarted mining and begun sending stockpiled ore to the mill. Mining.com also reported the restart after the temporary suspension.
The company’s announcement does not provide a day-by-day ramp schedule, so the accurate takeaway is narrow: production activities and ore shipments have resumed. Mining Our Future will follow later company updates for any change in output expectations.
Did the outage change Cameco’s 2026 uranium target?
Cameco says no. Its stated 2026 outlook for Cigar Lake remains between 17.5 million and 18.0 million pounds of U3O8 on a 100% basis. That figure is management’s current outlook, not a guarantee. The company’s release cautions that forward-looking information can change if operating conditions or other assumptions change.
That distinction matters. The verified news is that the mine and mill have restarted and the company has maintained its target. Future production is still subject to operating performance.
